Making it as an Independent Artist

How does one make it in music as an independent Artists? It’s not easy for certain, but it can and has been done.

The only Independent Artist that I know of who has made it really big, has been the Metallica Band. Special conditions existed that allowed the Metallica Band to make it to Super Stardom as Independent Artist. I will be going into how Metallica made it later on in the paper.

First some basics on what it takes to make it in music.

The truth is that it is difficult to succeed in music and this is true no matter how talented a person might be. The only people who make it in the music business are the ones that are absolutely determined to succeed and they are willing to pay the price for making it. If the person has the determination to stick with it no matter what happens, stick with it until they become a star, and they are willing to put their total energy into making it, and they are truly talented and have something to offer the music lovers of the world, they will eventually succeed but it may take many years to achieve their goals of becoming a star.

The conditions that must be met if someone is to make it and become a star.

1. An aspiring artists must have the talent to play music that the music lovers will love. Without this ability, it matters not how much money is backing the artists.
2. The second requisite is that the Artists must desire stardom so much they are completely determined to make it and will not stop until they do succeed. Anyone who does not have this much determination to make it will never achieve success in music.

An interesting point here is that in an interview Eddie Rabbit was ask what he would be doing if he had not made it. He quickly replied, "I’d still be trying." This is the determination that caused Eddie Rabbit to succeed. Of course Eddie Rabbit was super talented as both a song writer and singer. He had music talent to the very high level. However it was his determination to make it that caused him to do what was necessary to succeed. Anyone who does not have the determination that Eddie Rabbit had will never make it to stardom.

3. Metallica proved that one can make it as an independent recording artists. But the next requisite comes into play at this point, one must have some money in back of them if they are to make it to stardom as an independent artists.

Metallica had to have enough money, or was able to get the money through financial backing or public performance to record their first High Quality Album. Of course the Metallica web site states that their very first recordings were done on a Cheap Tape Machine. However, later on Metallica Recordings were done on the best equipment and mixed by a Super Pro Producer.

To make it as an independent is much easier if there is a band involved, the whole band, not just one person. One person must hire studio musicians. A band does all the parts and no money is put out for additional musicians.

The Metallica web site reveals that the band was started on a shoe string, and talent. The fact that they were doing Metal music, something relatively new and a kind of specialty market and it was of course very popular with the young people who buy the most CDs.

All the things fell together and good things begin to happen for Metallica. The Metallica Story is almost one of a kind and is not easily duplicated.

Metallica found a record store in the east that specialized in Metal. The owner of the store liked what Metallica was doing and encouraged the band to come east for concerts. The Record Store owner who specialized in "Metal Music" was no doubt a big part in the Success of Metallica.

Every Musician’s dream is to become a super star. Metallica realized it’s dream. I know of no other independent recording band that has became super stars. This shows how difficult it is to become a super star without having a record deal with a big label.

Everything came together for Metallica because they had first of all the talent, and they had the determination to make it. And since Metallica was on the cutting edge of a new music that had proved to be tremendously popular with the young people who buy the most recordings, the Band Became Super Stars. Metallica also had some special talents that it takes to make it as an Independent Band. I think one has to believe that Metallica had what can be considered "Entrepreneurial" talent. I believe that to make it as an independent recording artists one must posses "Entrepreneurial" Talent.

I have to believe that Record Store Owner Jon Zazula who was so turned on by Metallica’s Sound that he formed his own Record Label Megaforce to record the band, was the big break for Metallica. The band found someone that loved their music and believed in them and he recorded Metallica and was the man who was behind their first album that made it and gave them their real start.

Somewhere along the line someone that can do things for a band must hear their music and be impressed for only when this happens can a band get introduced to the world of music lovers who will eventually make the band popular. Metallica was super lucky when "Metal Heaven" record store owner, Jon Zazula, in New York heard their very first recordings. Jon Zazula has to be an entrepreneur of some ability to start his own label, Megaforce, that would sign Metallica as his first Artist.

I searched the net and found that the Megaforce Record Label founded by Jon Zazula to present the music of Metallica to the world has sold more than 30 million CDs by various Artists. Though no other artists featured on the Megaforce Label has ever been as successful as Metallica, there are artists other than Metallica who were no doubt made successful by the Entrepreneur that believed in Metallica and founded a Label to present Metallica’s "Metal Music" to the world.
